Blog Post #2 – What is Time?

My inquiry question this semester is What is time, and why does its existence make us revolve around its complex concept?

I am looking forward to dissecting what it means to centre human livelihoods and societal structure around something much more intricate than we may think.

Research Step 1 – How does our perception of time change throughout the course of our lives? Why does time seem to move faster as we age?

The notion that time flies when your having fun, or as we age time seems to go by much quicker serve as age old sayings. However, have you ever questioned why these things hold a level of truth subjectivity to everyone? One of my main goals within this inquiry is to determine why these things happen, and whether what we have persistently been told proves to be more factual as time literally goes on. Understanding why these things happen will open up a philosophical understanding of how we can manipulate our circumstances to interpret time how we choose with a potential mindset shift.

Research Step 2 – How has society both benefited and been negatively impacted by time serving as the foundation of everything? Why are strict deadlines both motivating and bad for human mental health?

Society seems to be profoundly structured on the basis of deadlines, start times of everyday shifts; a numerical value placed on a random moment in your day that typically weighs heavily on our decision-making processes. A thorough understanding of why these things have the potential to take a toll on our mental health and circadian rhythm is both under-analyzed and ignored in a day-and-age where stress and high cortisol is normalized. Whether we choose to recognize it or not, these things are grossly unethical for longevity and often masked by instant dopamine, junk food, and materialistic items to drown out the pain that our bodies and minds experience everyday.

Research Step 3 – Does the fact that time can be measured differently in other parts of the universe make us question the validity of this topic altogether? Why did patterns in the galaxy combined with the human biology translate to such a central but intangible aspect of life?

Time zones are largely prevalent in our society. However, I would like to uncover this concept as something deeper than the differing patterns of the sun and the moon depending on the distance from the equator. Psychologically, how does this social construct divide those who aim to keep in touch through long-distance? Breaking down the deep-rooted, physiological, psycho-social, and physical elements within this question will help me uncover new territory within this complex and layered topic, something I have yet to see be cohesively researched for inquiry purposes.

  1. This is pretty well formed and documented and gives off some great insight onto our own minds and our philosophical thoughts. However, a great tool that can help laymans like myself who aren’t familiar with these terms you are bringing up can be confused with the wording so a small level of simplification can go a long way but overall this is a great blog post and I’m excited to see where you go with the concepts!

    1. Hi Alex, I really enjoyed reading your post. The thing that fascinated me most is the part where you will try to explain why people say that time flies quickly when having fun. The topic ”Time” is very interesting but still complicated.
Maybe you could try to research whether time travel is possible, many people have different arguments on this topic, and I think it would be fun to get to find out whether it is possible.

  2. Hello Ava,

I love this topic! And I loved reading your blog post as its so true we grow up saying these phrases, but realistically the time is not going faster; however, how does it still feel like our minds are being manipulated to think this way?

Another thing you could look at is the time going faster when we sleep!!

I really look forward to seeing where this question takes you, you clearly have a very well structured plan to guide you. I look forward to reading more of your blog posts as time its such a mind boggling topic!!

in the meantime take a look at this link, I think you might find it interesting!!
