About Me-Sarah Kim

My name is Sarah Kim, and I am 16 years old. I go to Dr Charles Best, and I live in Coquitlam, BC. My favorite subjects are Math, Social Studies and French.

I am Korean, but I was born in Ottawa. I love eating tteokbokki, kimbap, dakgalbi, bulgogi, Korean popsicles and rice cakes. One of the important traditions is we bow to show a sign of gratitude and respect to the person we meet. Also, we show a lot of respect to older people. For example, older people are supposed to sit down first at the dinner table. One thing that might surprise others is I love dancing, public speaking, baking, and playing basketball. I also really enjoy playing the piano and the flute.

I decided to join Butterfly for the second time this year because I loved learning about my passion. Last year, I learned about how prejudice is created and how technology affects our relationships. This year I hope to research on a deeper level about my passions such as child developing, studying habits and education. I expect butterfly to take me to become a more knowledge person on subjects I value, and I hope to encourage others to follow and study about their passion. My strongest trait is that I am very flexible to trying things outside my comfort zone. For example, I really want to try bungee jumping even though I am terrified of heights. I also really love trying different types of food like razor clams, goji berries, sea urchin, live octopus, etc. Finally, I also love taking risks like trying multiple sports even though I may not be the best in that sport. One of my gifts is that I love including others and helping them feel valued. For example, my main values are child development, education for everyone and equal rights for everyone. I feel like I have an important role to play in my community, so that everyone can succeed and have a sense of identity.

Community means a group of people from different backgrounds combined through their strengths to accomplish a common value or goal. To have a successful community, we need to care about including others, appreciate the relationships between our peers and participate in the many ideas that are presented. My place in my community is to volunteer to help kids have a healthy development like children’s church camps or art camps. I also help at the local art galleries to help small businesses. I also frequently visit my great grandma’s care home to deliver sweet cards to the elderly. A global community is when a big group of people from many different countries share, research and collaborate to create decisions on politics, education, etc. If I could solve any local or global problem, it would be that every values each other. Mental health is important because it affects every aspect of our life and how we approach conflicts. Many global conflicts may be resolved if we learn to value other countries like wars, reserves and the Indian act. If I could have any job, it would be a dessert judge. I love eating pastries and giving constructive criticism to the chefs. I also would love to appear on TV with unique clothing and makeup. In my free time, I love eating popcorn and watching romantic comedies on the bed. Next, I love scrap booking my experiences or travels to thoroughly remember them. After, I love doing sports to stay active when I am not doing my homework. The perfect best friend looks like one who is patient, understanding, respectful, thoughtful, and selfless. One of my heroes is my mom because she is very selfless and would be willing to sacrifice anything for me or my brother. She is also very hardworking as a doctor to help other patients avoid going to the ER and getting unnecessary surgeries. I would like to be the worst person on the best team, so I could learn and improve from the best team.

I am most interested in the Inquiry Project because I would love to know more about my many passions like child development, mental health and sexism.
