About Me – Perla Halime

Hi everyone and welcome to my first post of the year, my About Me Post!

My name is Perla Halime and I am super exited to kick off the semester! I am currently in grade 11 and I just turned 16 less than a week ago. I attend Dr. Charles Best Secondary School in Coquitlam, BC, Canada and I am in the French Immersion Program. This is my second year taking the course and which means I’ve been taking it since grade 10. My favorite part about the course is getting to learn new things from both writing my own Blog Posts and reading other people’s amazing Blog Posts.

I originally found out about PA-MOJA through taking social responsibility in grade ten which I found on my course selection sheet. I have to say, ticking that checkmark in the box in order to take the course was an amazing decision I made as it opened up very many opportunities. I really enjoyed learning new things and meeting new people from across the world. This course is different then the other courses I take at school which is why I truly enjoy it.

I expect Butterfly to teach me as much about myself this year as it did last year. I’m looking forward to leading more fundraisers this year and to keep on learning things about my school peers and about other people across the world. Last year, I did two inquiry projects and this semester I’m planning on doing the same.

One of my big passions is playing soccer. I have played soccer ever since I was in elementary school and ever since I began playing, it has always been a huge part of my identity. The soccer club I play with has different levels based on coachability, possession, attacking, defending, position, striking, athleticism, and commitment. Now I play D1 soccer, which is one of the highest levels and a competitive and intense team to play on within the club. I have also played on my school’s soccer team for two years and I plan on continuing to play on it. My coaches throughout the years have inspired me to push myself beyond the limit and accomplish things that I didn’t even believe I was capable of. From one of my huge passions, I have learned many lessons and had many positve experiences all making up the person I am.

Another one of my passions is reading. I read a lot during my free time, especially when I’m on long breaks from school. I really enjoy reading mystery books and usually prefer books written only in the first and third person. My favorite book changes each time I read a new one. But there’s a book that I am currently reading that I absolutely love. It’s a pretty popular book but I only ever got the chance recently to start reading it. It’s called a Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson. This book is part of a trigoly which I want to complete. But I have to say my all time favorite book, and one that I love to re-read is The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline. I first read the book in grade eigth and it never fails to entertain me when I need a short read.

My community plays a significant role in my life and has a variety of affects on me. Since we as humans appreciate the feeling of belonging, I believe that connection and belonging plays a big role in the concept of community. Without our community, we wouldnt be able to feel a sense of safety and belonging. To me, community refers to a place where you feel like you belong. Without our communities, we couldn’t interact with one another and experience a sense of worth, and we wouldnt feel seen or heard. I believe that one of the most significant elements of our world is community, which is something really sacred that we must continue to protect. Communities are bonded by attitudes, values and goals, meaning you can find like minded people in your community in order to connect with them and understand yourself. I have so many people in my life who inspire me everyday, who push and encourage me to be the best version of myself, and who have had a huge impact on who and where I am today and I am proud to be part of the same community as those people.

Community is also related to personal heroes, and my hero is Great Thunberg. I have admired her ever since I was around 10 years old. Over the years, she’s inspired me to continue to care for the environment and learn more about it. Her activism from a young age empowered me she always reminds me of feminism. Greta unfortunately struggles with Aspergers Syndrome, but that doesnt stop her from fighting for what she cares for. Her grit and perseverance makes her my hero.

Overall, I am really looking forward to learning more about the things I love and meeting new people. Thank you for reading and I’m very excited to get started!
