Blog #7- What’s the role of the media in current social movements?

Hi everyone!

In this last blog post, I will reflect on my research and its process

  1. What challenges did you overcome throughout this inquiry project? How did you go about overcoming these challenges?

There are many current social movements and I struggled to decide which ones to research about, and which examples to use. I overcame this challenge by choosing movements (feminism, anti-racism and environmentalism) that represented different areas of society. I also chose those ones because even though a lot of people know about them, they might not know about them in detail.

2. How did this inquiry change the way you think?

It made me more conscious about how the media, especially social media, can be used to change our perspective on topics. Both for the good and the bad. By researching more about anti-racism, I learned that some mass media (especially newspapers and tv news) use sensationalised or cherry-picked news. This often leads to harmful stereotypes of POC.

3. How did this investigation impact your future decisions?

I will use social media more with more caution. Even more than now, I will make sure I’m reading or following people that are credible in their area and use reliable sources. Both these things help to avoid believing in fake news.

4. What impact will this investigation have on others locally and/or globally?

Both locally and on a global scale, I think that people that read this will also become more aware of the media consumption.

In addition, I hope people will understand that the media can be used to make a difference in the world. As I talked about in my other posts, social media is a great place to get to know movements and activists, so I hope my research will inspire them to become more involved.
