Blog post #3 What is the impact of automation and artificial intelligence on the future of work and employment?

Hello everyone, my inquiry question is “What is the impact of automation and artificial intelligence on the future of work and employment?”, this is my first round of research, and the topic I will focus on is ” What is the growth rate of automation and artificial intelligence in the different work fields?”, I will talk about my research about the past growths of AI and automation in various fields and try to predict the future growth rate.

The huge spike in AI growth is related to the number of research researchers and programmers spent developing new ideas, new concepts, and new ways to adapt the AI to become more and more capable, where the goal is to first have the equivalent human abilities in the field of work that it is made to work in, then possibly even surpassing human abilities. (1) Although the growth of AI seemed to be growing exponentially, the use of AI in the work fields is still very limited and seemed to be growing at a way lesser speed compared to the growth and development of AI and machines capable of automation. The use of AI is only limited because of people’s limited trust in the use of AI, because of people’s trust issues against AI, new companies are more likely to use or adopt AI or automation. Furthermore, in companies that are older and bigger, changes like introducing the use of AI will be more influence almost every element of the company- older employees may be very uncomfortable around new technologies like AI, and even if they are comfortable, they will need to change and adapt to the new technology, and many more reasons for the big companies to hold off the introduction of AI into their working fields until later when the technology is more advanced. (2) In conclusion, many big companies will hesitate to implement AI now, but when AI and automation become more advanced and more necessary, that is when AI will be more likely to grow.

In conclusion, the growth of AI can only be faster in the future, and we can possibly expect to see many fields of works to start using and trusting the services of AI as it becomes more and more reliable.

In the next blog post, I will cover “Is AI capable of jobs requiring sympathy, care, and the will to sacrifice oneself?”

  1. Hi there!
I am very interested in your research, as a mechatronic engineer. So far, it’s inarguable just how much AI has become a part of us, and probably will continue to constitute a huge chunk of humankind’s future.
it’s interesting how the use of AI has evolved from merely conventional fields such as manufacturing to even art and music. In the future, I expect automation and AI to play an even bigger role in workplaces and even in households. While that may lead to the loss of certain jobs, AI and automation will also create new job opportunities such as data management, and possibly, we will have created new fields of collaboration between machines and human beings.
All the same, jobs that require empathy as compared to the repetition of manual work may prove difficult for AI to replace, at least for now.
At the moment, however, AI and automation may have both positive and negative effects on jobs. I think the policies we lay down will pave a way into just how much AI will constitute various aspects of human life.

    1. Hello,
Thank you for your comment! I’m very glad to hear your opinion on AI as a mechatronic engineer, and I share the same expectation, I think a future with AI helping us to do most of the labour work sounds great. It may also be a big step towards a more educated world, where everyone’s life is more sophisticated and despite where they come from, they all have good access to technology and knowledge.

  2. Hello Scott,
I really enjoyed reading your blog post as it is very pertinent right now as we things such as Chat GPT and other AI tools gaining more and more popularity. I wonder if AI will remove the need for writers and any other job that might be computer based, such as office jobs?I really look forward to reading your future blog posts on this topic , here are some resources that could help you.
