Blog Post #3- Inquiry Project

My Inquiry question is: ” Has Technology positively Impacted the sports industry?”.

This is my first round of research where I will review existing studies and literature on the impact of technology on the sport industry. This will provide me with a solid foundation of information to address my question.MediaCentral for Sports Video Management - Avid Technology

Sports Broadcasting: The impact of technology on sports broadcasting has been significant over the past few years. Advances in technology have allowed for more engaging and interactive viewing experiences for fans. Simon, Whelan, and Fitzgerald (2018) argue that technology has played a crucial role in revolutionizing the way sports are broadcasted. For example, technology has enabled real-time data analytics, 360-degree video, and virtual and augmented reality experiences. This allows fans to immerse themselves in the game, feel as if they are present in the stadium, and have access to data that was previously unavailable. In addition, technology has also enabled the creation of personalized content and real-time engagement with fans through social media and digital platforms (Funk & Geisler, 2018). Furthermore, the emergence of sports streaming services such as DAZN, ESPN+, and Amazon Prime Video has disrupted the traditional sports broadcasting model. These services have allowed for more flexible viewing options and lower costs for fans, while also providing new revenue streams for leagues and teams. The COVID-19 pandemic has also accelerated the shift towards digital platforms, as many fans had to rely on streaming services to watch live sports due to restrictions on in-person attendance.

Athlete Performance: Advances in technology have also transformed the way athletes train and perform. Wearables and data analytics have enabled personalized training programs, improved injury prevention and rehabilitation, and optimized performance. Funk and Geisler (2018) argue that technology has revolutionized sports training by providing athletes with real-time data on their performance, allowing for more targeted training programs that address their strengths and weaknesses. Wearables such as heart rate monitors and GPS devices can also track athlete’s physical exertion, distance covered, and overall performance. This information can be used to adjust training and nutrition programs to optimize performance and prevent injuries. Moreover, technology has enabled athletes to train remotely and communicate with coaches and trainers from anywhere in the world. This allows athletes to access the best training programs and experts, regardless of their location. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, many athletes had to train at home, and technology allowed them to continue their training programs remotely. In conclusion, technology has had a significant impact on athlete performance, providing new opportunities for training and performance optimization.

Fan Engagement and The Second ScreenFan Engagement: Technology has also transformed the way fans engage with sports. Social media and digital platforms have enabled fans to interact with athletes, teams, and other fans in real-time. Funk and Geisler (2018) note that social media has provided athletes with a platform to connect with fans, build their personal brand, and engage with their followers. Fans can follow their favorite athletes and teams on social media, access exclusive content, and engage in real-time conversations during games. In addition, technology has enabled the creation of virtual and augmented reality experiences, allowing fans to feel as if they are present in the stadium or even on the field. Furthermore, technology has also enabled the creation of new revenue streams through e-sports and virtual sports betting. These platforms provide fans with new ways to engage with sports, and also provide new revenue streams for leagues and teams. In conclusion, technology has had a significant impact on fan engagement, providing fans with new ways to interact with sports and engage with their favorite athletes and teams.

  1. Hi Martina,

This is such an interesting topic as technology has become very prevalent in our society today. I did not realize how much technology has effected sports. I liked how you described in detail how technology allows athletes to track their results and performance.

A suggestion for the future is talk to about how technology can positively effect the communication between the athlete and his coach, as I find that vital as an athlete myself.

Here’s a few websites I found that might help:
