R2: HOW GENDER AFFECTS READING OF CUES

Gender is being male or female, especially when considered with reference to social and cultural differences. In one way or the other, reading of social cues is affected by gender. In communication, men tend to use more of facts when solving problems[1]. They try to leave the anecdotes and women use more of a “rapport” style to build relationships [1]. Gender affects communication mostly with non-verbal cues. This can be seen in that, unlike women, men use less of the available non-verbal cues such as smiling less. Female gendered people typically use eye contact as a way of showing engagement in a conversation while the male gendered people tend to avoid it or show that they are listening to a speaker with their eyes closed [1].

Fidgeting is a cue and has different responses when it comes to reading and interpreting it. Female fidgeting is mostly assumed to be flirtatious[2]. This not often the case because  sometimes they do so simply because they are anxious and not flirting but when males fidget it typically shows that they are bored [2]. Men use touch as a show of dominance and women use it just to build a connection or reassure[1]. According to psychology today, it has been shown that men are less successful in reading or sending non-verbal cues [1]. Well, this is one  topic that really makes me somehow more curious to know and really learn more about gender in large. Thanks for reading my post.
