Blog Post 2- Action Post

Hello again! Here is my second action post.

Do some research on your possible action areas (or your specific action you have already chosen) that you listed in your Action Post #1.

I have researched the cost of supplies (canvases, paints, and brushes) first. By doing this I knew how much to charge for the art I was making. It also depends on how detailed a piece is because that would mean I would be spending more time on it. Generally, anything done on paper is going to be cheaper. Paintings on paper are around 5 dollars and drawings on paper are 2 dollars. Next, depending on the size and quality of the canvas and the type of paint (oil or acrylic) paintings on canvas can range from 10- 20 dollars. Subsequently, I researched the art center I was donating to. The place is called “My Artist’s Corner” located on Canada Way in Burnaby. When I looked on their site, I found a donation tab, making it an easy donation to make online!

1.) Provide a summary of the action you are planning and how are you going to start.

My action project will be raising money for a local art center that provides art supplies/ lessons for people with mental health issues needing a form of expression or relaxation. The money will be raised from art commissions I will do and it will be covering the costs of art supplies and entrance fees at the art center. I am going to start by making a poster to put up in local centers and share it with Instagram accounts that would be willing to help. I need to find people who would like art made for them so I will try to tell friends and other students about my action.

2.) One lesson in the talk is that ‘Everything is complicated’. Can you explain some of the complexity that you will face in your action?’

My action is not very sustainable. I know that fundraisers are never really a long-term help to people, but I still believe that my actions will have good consequences. I might struggle to find people who are willing to donate/ buy art. I don’t think is a big problem though because I don’t have to donate a ton of money. As much as I can get is still going to help a lot. Another struggle could be the amount of time each painting/drawing will take me. Art takes me a while to make and this may be an issue if I have schoolwork or studying to do.

3.) Is this action sustainable? Provide some specific examples to support your reasoning.

Again, this action is not sustainable. This is because the money I’m collecting will be donated around April as a one-time donation. The action would be sustainable if I could find a way to keep donating monthly or annually. Unfortunately, I doubt that I can keep up the commissions for that long. Secondly, the action is not sustainable because the money I am donating can only be used to lower the admission costs for only a number of people. Although, some of the money could go towards buying better supplies for the studio. This would be a longer-lasting impact that would make my action more sustainable.

4.) Is this action providing opportunity? How will you ensure you are making the positive impact that you intend?

This action is providing opportunity for people who need a calming activity that can help them become more expressive and confident in themselves. Not everyone can afford these resources therefore, by donating I can increase the chance of people taking advantage of it. In addition, if the studio buys better supplies, the experience will be more enjoyable for the people there. Lastly, I will ensure that I am making a positive impact by asking the studio what they are planning to buy. I might recommend supplies that I know would be good for artists that are just starting out.

5) Try to find an expert to be part of your action. Who knows a lot about the area you are studying? Who could help you on your journey to make a difference? Introduce yourself and include the following information:

  • Name of Expert ( Make sure your expert is comfortable with you posting their name on our website)

My expert’s name is Tara Mclean. She is a Clinical Coordinator and a Mental Health Therapist working for Fraser Health.

  • What areas does your expert specialize in? What is their education background? What experience do they have in this area?

She specializes in mental health therapy. Her education consists of an MA in Counselling Psychology, a PhD in Organizational Leadership, and a BA in psychology.

  • What advice have they given to you on accomplishing your project?

She has given me many tips about my project. Specifically, she suggested that I donate to “My Artist’s Corner” because she has a relationship with the studio. Moreover, she has given me advice about getting my message out and why people benefit from making art. Tara told me she could hang up posters in places she knew they could gain attention from. I will be taking her up on her offer after I’ve taken the first steps to start my action!

Also, If anyone from butterfly effect is interested in a commission feel free to comment

Here are some examples of art I have made.
