Blog Post 1: Values Activity & Aligning this with Global Millennium Goals

  1. a) What are your 3 most important values?

Based on the choices I was given, I think my 3 most important values would be A) equality: I believe that everyone should have the same opportunities and rights. P) personal growth:  I believe it is important to continually pursue new skills and self-awareness. X) responsibility:  I believe it is important for people to voluntarily do what is expected of them.

b) What are your 3 least important values?

Based on the choices I was given, I think the 3 least important values would be T) spiritual growth:  I believe it is important for people to seek connection to a higher purpose. C) tradition:  I believe we should respect an established way of how things have been done. M) compassion: I believe it is important to feel sympathy, care for concern for others.

2. Do you agree with the results? What do these values mean to you?

I think these values do represent what I prioritize in life the most and the least, therefore I do agree with these results. I prioritize equality in my everyday life. I think it is very important to acknowledge that at the end of the day, we are equal no matter what. I would place that value as my top one. The next value I got was personal growth. Again, I completely agree with this result. I think it is incredibly important to value personal growth as it helps you grow as a person, and it also helps others around you grow and learn from you in some cases. For me, personal growth is what helps me push my limits. It helps me want to keep striving to become an overall better person. I am proud to say that so far, it has been working. My last value was responsibility. I believe that everyone has responsibilities in life. It’s just the way life works. Responsibility is what keeps everything in order. When people are responsible, it makes me gain more respect for them.

My 3 least important values were spiritual growth, tradition, and compassion. I think spiritual growth was one of my least important values because personally, I don’t pay a lot of attention, nor do I really believe in it. Tradition is something  I do believe is important, but there are things that are more important. I enjoy the traditions that have been passed down through generations in my family. This is a result I don’t completely agree with. Tradition is not a value that I would consider my top 3 most important, but I do not agree that it should be in my 3 least important values. My last value was compassion. I found it strange that this was in my 3 least important values as I am a very compassionate person. I care for others a lot and I am very considerate towards other people’s feelings and emotions. I will never do anything to hurt someone intentionally.

4.) Research United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

a) Which one aligns with your values most?

After taking a look at the United Nations 17 sustainable development goals, I think the one that aligns with my values the most is reduced inequality. I think this is a very important value that everyone should prioritize. Unfortunately, there is still a lot of inequalities within our society. However, many people are working very hard to hopefully change that soon.

b) Which one is your passion Why?

I think my passion would have to be climate action. However, I think I would like to choose my action project around reduced inequality. I think this is a very important, ongoing topic. This does not just affect a certain group, but every single one of us. It affects the Earth. I believe that many of the other UN sustainable development goals can be resolved if climate action is resolved.

c) Give one specific action you would like to apply to address this goal.

I am still unsure of the action my group and I would like to take in order to address this goal. We brainstormed and came up with a few ideas that will help reduce inequality even if it is just on a small scale. We are still in the process of reaching out to different people and organizations, trying to figure out which one is the most accessible and will allow us to all be able to participate.
