 “Is Sleep Really That Important?”

By: Karen Zoulau

What challenges did you overcome throughout this inquiry project? How did you go about overcoming these challenges?

I had a few challenges I had to overcome, but one that particularly stood out was the lack of images. I found it hard to get specific and different portraits with every search. I overcame this by searching for different key words. For example, I might search, “sleep” if I want to lookA Good Night's Sleep | National Institute on Aging for an image with the process of sleeping in it, or I might search, “clock” if I want to look for an alarm clock, relating to the process of waking up after sleep.

How did this inquiry change the way you think?

This inquiry made me realize that sleep is much more important than I thought it was. I realized this when I noticed that sleep disorders arise from common sleep issues like a lack of sleep or sleeping in inadequate environments. This really startled me because I found out that sleep disorders can actually cause long term side effects. How did this investigation impact your future decisions?

This investigation impacted my future decisions largely. As a matter of fact, I have already started taking precautions in fulfilling my sleep schedule to gain at least 7 hours of rest each day. In order to do this, I have set up alarms for sleeping and waking times, I have also been trying to manage my time more wisely, as I often procrastinate, leading to late-night crams or study sessions. I have done this by making simple schedules to follow, stating different times for different activities, every day.

I hope that this investigation will give people a deeper understanding on how sleep is important to us. If this occurs, people will learn the benefits of gaining enough sleep and the disadvantages of sleep disorders that occur from everyday losses of sleep. Hopefully a variety of different people will understand, and will be able to take the research I use in my posts into consideration.
