Hello!
In this blog, I will be talking about what direction I would be taking in terms of my topic “Does family or culture have more of an influence on the occurrence of eating disorders?”.
“Eating disorders affect at least 9% of the population worldwide. 9% of the U.S. population, or 28.8 million Americans, will have an eating disorder in their lifetime.”
I feel like this topic is really important to our society, especially to family members with children because eating disorders are more prone to affect adolescents these days. We should all be aware of the cause and occurrence of eating disorders, and how to flatten the rising curve of eating disorders in general. For this project, I plan on addressing different types of eating disorders, how much they affect teenagers specifically, how does family influence the occurrence of eating disorders, how does culture influence the occurrence of eating disorders, do the 2 actually affect and influence our perspective of food and weight and how we could fix the problem.
Here’s a breakdown of how the project’s going to look:
First post:
- different types of eating disorders
- why is it important to differentiate them
This helps people gain actual knowledge on eating disorders, instead of referring to everyone with an eating disorder as “anoroxic”.
Second post:
- how does eating disorder affect the general public
- how does it affect teens
- cultural influence vs family influence
This can tell us the hefty role eating disorders play in our daily lives, especially teens. Then i will address my topic: “Does family or culture have more of an influence on the occurrence of eating disorders?”. As well as which one is more prominent.
Third post:
- do they actually affect our perspective of food and weight gain/lose
- how can we fix the problem
In the last post, I will discuss whether/ how much family and culture change how we perceive food, and how we could fix this.

Dear Ronnie,
Something I remember enjoying about your action posts from the start was that you were very clear on what the important pieces of your topic were; so I thank you for the flow in writing!
You have a very intriguing, thought-provoking question! It is actually one I had not thought about before, as well. As your inquiry project is more fact-based and statistic-backed, I believe research papers will further help you find an answer to your question. Wonderful work on the exploratory question, and so, just as I am, I am sure the Butterfly Effect & Social Responsibility students are intrigued to learn more!
On your initial plan, I had also given you come links to eating disorder awareness organizations and entities. I found some more below, hope they help!:

thank you so much!
Hello Ronnie,
Looks great so far! I think your question is really important to consider with illnesses like eating disorders that are mostly not hereditary but are environmental. A person’s family is a huge part of their environment. Considering that, it might be easier to argue that family does influence eating disorders. As for the cultural influence, I think that also counts as an environmental factor.

Hi Ronnie,
I love the way you’ve outlined the flow of your project.
I think this is a very important topic in our society today and therefore am looking forward to reading your future postings on this topic.
Good job!
Hey Ronnie,
I love how concise you were about the points in your research and the explanations of your reasoning behind them were equally clear! As you mentioned, I think eating disorders are on a rise due to social factors and the idea of a singular “perfect body,” which can be detrimental to an individual’s mental, physical and emotional health.
For your future rounds perhaps you can also quickly touch on not just what influences eating disorders but what affects eating habits in general and how these habits might turn unhealthy, developing into a disorder.
