Societal issues in my community – BC Canada

What societal issues are currently important in your community?

In Canada, it seems like we’ve had a recent interest in social justice and societal issues. Especially since we’ve had a lot of time to reflect during quarantine, we’ve come to realize that there are a lot of problems present in our society. In this post, I’ll talk a little bit about these problems, and what people are trying to do to solve them.

A big movement that has recently become present in Canada is the black lives matter movement (blm). The blm movement is not new, but it has recently grown in popularity. With the growing amount of shooting motivated by racism in America, Canadians have taken this time to reflect on the racism present in our own country. Opinions on the movement vary between different people. Some Canadians have decided that a change must me made, and have even attended protests. There was even a protest in downtown Vancouver, near where I live. I was not allowed to go, but I followed the protest online. Other Canadians are against the blm movement, claiming that the movement in itself is racist and exclusive towards people of other races.

Another big issue is climate change, which became very popular after protests lead by Greta Thunberg took place all over the world. We realized that time is running out, and we need to act quickly in order to reduce climate change. In Vancouver, our protests were demanding action from the government and others in positions of power. The indigenous people of Canada play a big role in this movement, because they’ve had been living in harmony with the land for generations before we arrived. The majority of climate change activists believe that we should listen to indigenous voices, and let them teach us. By working together, we can find a way to live in harmony with nature again.

One of the things that has been an issue where I live is the rate of homelessness and poverty in Vancouver, specifically downtown Vancouver. I don’t know much about this topic, but I do know that the government is starting to think of creative ways to get people back on their feet and keep them safe.

There are many other societal issues present in Canada, but these are the firsts that came to mind! Thank you for reading my post,

Jasmine P 😊

  1. Hi Jasmine,

    Hope you are well!

Kudos to you on shining light on societal issues at the moment. You have provided good ideas for easing tensions and finding positive outcomes! I do like how you had said we “realized that time is running out, and we need to act quickly.” Our youth, especially, have been stepping up quite a lot – so great to see, as a young learner and leader myself.

    Best,

    Galicia.
