Action Post #1 : Values Activity & Global Goals

My three most important values:

Part A)

  1. I believe it is important to find new and creative ways of doing things.
  2. I believe it is important to take care of others and help them meet their needs.
  3. I believe it is important to continually pursue new skills and self awareness.

Part B)

  • Innovation
  • Helping
  • Personal Growth

My three least important values:

Part A)

  1. I believe that everyone should have the same opportunities and rights.
  2. I believe it is important for people to be able to explore the unknown and test limits.
  3. I believe it is important for people to voluntarily do what is expected of them.

Part B)

  • Equality
  • Risk
  • Responsibility

Do you agree with the results? Do you think the statements are good descriptions of the values? Do you think there are some values missing?  What do your 3 important values mean to you?

I do agree fully with results. I believe that innovation, helping and personal growth were described in perfect wording, as well as risk however I think that not all risk comes from exploring and testing limits. Risk is more of a just do what you feel even if others don’t believe the same, risk to me is more of a self-motivated act. Equality and responsibility on the other hand I think could use better wording. Equality in my opinion is not just race, gender or sex that is given in the equality spectrum but opportunities linked to equality I believe should be earned. Not all the same opportunities should be given to everyone, especially if someone worked hard for an opportunity vs. someone that paid their way to it. Responsibility on the other hand is not whether it was expected or not in either situation if it is you or someone else you should be accountable for your actions and/or their own actions. Responsible is not something that you can necessarily teach to someone and so no responsibility is non voluntary action that many will take charge of unless spoken upon. Other than that, innovation, helping and personal growth are three values that I try and work on, on a day to day. The values help me to challenge myself to create something better and to be rewarded my success in either my own accomplishments or in aid of a peer. I am currently peer tutoring a class right now and it’s my biggest reward seeing students understand what is happening/going on in class and them being able to enjoy the class because they can engage with the other students that do understand. Lastly, a quote that I strongly live by is “why are you the exact same person you were a year ago.” I like this quote because it made me think what has changed in the last year do, I like what I have done and what I have changed to be here. You should not the same person you were a year ago, you should constantly be trying to improve yourself and doing new things, allowing you to grow into your best self.

Can you describe a situation where you put into action one or more of the values most important to you? What was the result?

Going back almost a year now, when I first started my job as a dental receptionist the whole experience getting started in my opinion used these values to their fullest. It was hard for me since I had never had a job using any of their materials/appointment system and everything was very new to me. It test not only my skills to push myself but since my manager didn’t have the most time to teach me everything herself I would have to sort of teach myself. That really pushed me to step outside of the box, fine the ways that helped me to learn (innovation,) how to deal with patients and co-workers in the correct manner (helping,) and lastly I learned a lot about myself in the process as well (personal growth.)

Imagine some future situations where you could put your values into action.

Innovation: Grasping a great idea from either yourself or someone else and adding pinches to make it better and better. Whether it be at work or at school.

Helping: No matter if someone ask for it or if someone tells you to help someone, seek the urge to help others even if you are interested in the subject (school) or even if you can try to help them to your best ability.

Personal growth: just trying to better yourself on a day to day basis, if one day went horribly what can you change and if a day went amazingly what happened in that day that made it so great. You should not be the same person you were a year ago, something that I will live by.

Which global goal aligns best with your values?

The global goal that best describes my action and my values would be good health and well being. In the future I do hope to become a dental hygienist which fits perfectly with my global goal in this action project. I believe that this is my passion because I love to help others feel better about themselves i.e. their smiles and I love to be around people, see them grow, and see growth within my work as well. For my action I will be helping with a dental clinic, learning the importance and ways of a hygienist.
