Just a quick recap for those of you that haven’t read my action plan, I am going to be coming up with one things I can change in my day to day life to help the environment each week! I am also going to be logging everything I do into a public instagram account so that I can share this positive change with others.
This week, I have decided to start using a compost bin! My family used to compost, but we stopped using it because we found it was very inconvenient. No one wanted to dispose of the compost or clean the bin, so it didn’t really work out. However, after a bit of research, I realized how beneficial using a compost bin is good for the environment. Here is what I learnt:
- Compost that is in landfills under piles of garbage don’t decay in the same way they would in the soil. The garbage creates an anaerobic environment, and the plants produce methane gas, which is harmful for the environment and helps cause global warming. By using a compost bins, you help ensure the number of plants in the landfil is kept to minimum.
- Composting continues the natural life cycle of a plant. It helps fees the soil and provides nutrients for other plants to grow.
- Compost is spread on farm land instead of chemicals and fertilisers. Chemical fertilizers are really bad for the environment, and by composting, you are helping minimize the amount of chemical fertilizers used.

I haven’t really run into any challenges so far, because it’s my first week using my new compost bin. I’m excited to see how it goes!
Thanks for reading my action post!
Hi Jasmine!
That is great that you have decided to return to making environmentally friendly choices again! I understand that it can be difficult and time consuming to keep everything separate, but it is important for us to do so. It’s great that you have lined up information about what you are doing and the impacts it has on our environment! This can help you to stay motivated and not give up on your goal.
If it helps and you haven’t been doing it already, my family puts paper towels around the inside of our compost bin so that it is easier to clean out. Paper towel will decompose eventually and makes it a lot easier to clean the compost bin.
Good luck! I look forward to seeing how your project develops!

Hi Jessica,
Thank you very much for your advice! I think using paper towels is an awesome way to make it easier to clean, and I will definitely be doing that from now on!
