Hi all!
I am so sorry this family incident has taken my attention away from my blog but I needed time with family during these hard times and I thank you all for your understanding.
My most recent action was being a big buddy. This was outside of my leadership class but still in the community. I was able to be a role model for a young girl in the third grade for a couple of days. We did different activities together like arts and crafts and reading, making a fairy garden in the park, and many more. She was able to help me with very big problems like what I should have for lunch when I got home at the end of the day or which colour socks to wear the next day. I must say, the kids are adorable.
It was overall pretty successful for me but one challenge was the first out of 4 days she was very shy for the first little while of the day, but when we found a common interest in pink, glitter and unicorns, we got along just fine. I find with younger kids like herself, it is easier to talk to yourself around them, leaving them windows to chime in. Like this:
“What’s your favourite flavour of ice cream? Mine is cotton candy, but it used to be chocolate, but cotton candy is so much prettier don’t you think?”
This way, the kids can give a simple nod or shake or answer if they’re comfortable enough.
I’m not sure if I’ll be doing any more work with kids this semester due to exams but we’ll have to wait and see!
Thank you so much for your patience and reading,
Claire
