Hello everyone, this is my fifth blog post for my inquiry project, and my inquiry question is “How do people gain respect from others, and the effects of culture on how one gains respect.”
This is my last round of research, and I will be researching and summarizing how to gain respect from others, even if they are from different cultures, and some very commonly liked traits by people of various cultures.
There is a lot of information online, helping you to gain respect from other people, for example, being polite to others, thinking before you speak, and respecting others will also help you gain respect in return (1). Although most of the tips are very helpful and get straight to the point, but as teenagers who grew up hearing this, it does get somewhat repetitive after a while, and sometimes those tips online can be really opinionated and won’t serve any help to you at all in getting respect from others. However, here are some general tips that I have summarized after my research, which are more specific and can be changed around to fit your unique person (2):
- Don’t be a people pleaser. If you are a people pleaser, you are in danger of lowering your self-worth for other people’s happiness, which can lead to you being seen as lower or inferior to others (3). Although caring about other people’s feelings is very important, it is also important that you stay true to yourself in situations where you feel pressured to do something that you don’t want to (3). If you think about it, having good self-worth is the same thing as having good self-respect, and it all makes sense as you want respect from others, you should respect yourself first (4)! If you know what you want in life and value yourself, people will come to respect you more, and those who stay are true friends and families!
2. BE YOURSELF… while having bottom lines and respecting other people for their choices. It is very important to stay true to yourself while adapting to social expectations and boundaries, where a lot of people get lost and lose their original selves in the trade of getting respect from others (5). It is important to respect others and their boundaries, and it is also equally important to respect your own individuality, and it would the one thing making you stand out from the others, therefore gaining respect from others (5). I would like to say that most of the people have met that one person, and felt like “I want to have the same confidence that they have to just be themselves” (5). It is brave to be yourself in our world because of how judgemental people are, and that is what makes being yourself such a respectable trait!
Thank you for reading my blog post!
