Blog Post #2 – Inquiry Blog – How do study habits and techniques influence memory recall in school?

My Inquiry questions: How do study habits and techniques influence memory recall in school?

To research and answer this question I chose three subcategories to study:

How does our brain store and categorize long and short memories

I want to first understand how our brain processes our daily experiences into memories and how we can utilize this information to more efficiently study for tests in school. I feel like this is an essential question to ask because by understanding how our brain functions and categorize memories, we can better comprehend which study methods better work for our individual needs.Furthermore I would also like to research about different functions of the brain that may help us have better memory recall and touch on how we can take advantage of our strengths and weaknesses to accomplish this goal.

What study habits or influences in our daily lives that affect our memory recall?

There are many factors from our surroundings and environment that influence how we behave and act towards different situations. By asking this question, I want to understand what influences from our daily lives can affect the way remember events and our short or long term memory. In other words, I generally want study both negative and positive habits implanted in our day-today routine that affect the way we memorize information in a academic setting.

What are some study methods and habits that will help us better focus and recall information in school?

in this last question, I want to find the “best” study methods that will help students study for future exams and tests. I know that I have definitely struggled finding methods of studying that actually work and help me process information taught in school, so by researching this topic I hope I can essentially learn ways to improve my memorization as well as others. Additionally, By knowing what learning practices are better for active recall, students can feel less stressed and worried about studying and be confident in and perhaps even out of school.

Im really looking to learning about this subject this semester, I hope I can help students by researching about this topic.

  1. Hi Lily!

I love the nature of your question, since we are all students your question is not only beneficial but supportive and appreciative as it allows readers who are students to be influences as well!
I think the breakdown of your ‘big question’ into three smaller questions is brilliant and creates a gateway for readers to understand your research in a great manner. Especially your last part where you are researching the best methods; maybe when you are researching those methods you could break them down into the best methods for specific types of students?

For example for those who have different learning styles like auditory, visual, kinesthetic, as well as those who study better in the early morning in comparison to those who study better in the night? This way you can connect with certain types of students on a deeper level!
