Blog Post #1 – Story

Hello everyone! For my final project in this class, I decided to do a story project because it’s the only one I’ve never done before! For my first blog post, I did free writing in my journal. I chose to do it with a pen and paper instead of my computer because I find it easier to brainstorm when I write things down physically. The free writing was actually a lot easier than I was expecting and I came up with many more ideas than I thought I would! It was a little difficult not taking my pen off of the paper, but it was only for five minutes so it wasn’t too bad. One idea I came up with was about a girl who died almost 100 years ago, but she came back to life as a ghost. In a small town, my main character will be an 18 year old ghost who struggles to understand her mysterious existence and longs for a place to belong. After going out in a snowstorm, her memory of the night of her death is triggered, and forgotten memories begin to emerge. Her lies about her supernatural identity become incredibly hard to maintain, and her secret threatens to slip out. Faced with the realization that she can no longer hide the truth, she’ll have to make a decision. In order to find solace and acceptance, will she abandon her loved ones, or continue living a lie? I think this is the story I will be writing for this project and it will most likely be a short story!

  1. Hi Shaila,

It’s great that you were able to come up with more ideas than expected during your free write, this gives you a lot more options to write about or experiment with. Your idea with the ghost girl definitely seems interesting and has potential, and is certainly a story I’d like to read. I’m curious about the lies part and what lies are they. I look forward to see your future blog posts

  2. Hiii Shaila!

I can’t wait to see your story come to life! It’s definitely easier to brainstorm ideas when you write them down. It almost feels more original and authentic that way when your hand is able to come to contact with the paper. With all your great ideas, your mind was probably talking faster than your hand, which I can totally relate to. I love the idea that you have decided to do! It’s super interesting, a great plot, mysterious, and it’s already got me hooked! The chilling question where you said, “in order to find solace and acceptance, will she abandon her loved ones, or continue living a lie?”. That part was just so creative and cool. You know how to summarize your plot, present your ideas, and give away just the right amount of information to capture your audience. I would one hundred percent read this story and I cannot wait to see your progress! Best of luck <3

  3. Hi Shaila!

I think this is an awesome idea for a story. i took creative writing last semester and writing short stories was one of our first assignments, and also was an option for choice work. I’m not sure if you’ve taken creative writing yourself, but what Mr. Baker taught us was to do Scales. We get a journal and a pen and every day at the beginning of class (or before you sit down to write) you pick a prompt such as ‘a giant alien broke into your house in the middle of the night, what happened?’ and these prompts are meant to get your creativity flowing because if you’ve been focused on academics like math and science all day, getting into that mindset can be quite a challenge. I hope this helps with keeping your pen going through those brainstorm sessions! Good luck!
