Blog #5 -> How have authors impacted society today?

Hi everyone! Thank you for joining me on my last blog post about this subject! Today I will be going into detail about how authors books stuck around for so long (such as why they have become classics, and how people still enjoy their stories daily), as well as how their stories and books have impacted our society today.

Starting with how our world is affected by the views and thoughts, one of the main reasons that classic novels were gave people such unforgivable experiences whenever they read it, is because the work was something that society did not view as conventional, or they did not think about at all (1). It was a genuine and new innovative thought that many people thought in the back of their mind, it was simply pointed out within that book. Classic literature has also created a guideline for people to follow. This is in the context of that literature at that time had become so limited and dull, that when a story with challenging thoughts came to life, it caused many to think analytically and critically in order to find out why they like or hate the idea so much, and why they are relating to it aka how it has affected them after reading the text (2). This also became a great way for researches to know and realise what thinking was like and how the world worked during the olden times, when only cursive journals and some photographs can be found from (2).

Many like to also critique writing from now, and the past, with a lot of people saying how writing in the past is much better than it is now, even though we as a society have evolved so much (hopefully for the better, but it seems unlikely) (3). It is believed that writing in the past was a bit easier because many were not exposed to lots of different areas of opinion and experience as we are now; meaning that media, and social media is something that now everyone depends on when in the past, you would not know the global opinion, and only the opinion of others around you (3). Because writing is a process that takes lots of time because you need evidence and a free mind, it is more difficult to write now, than it was in the past. We have so many distraction in our society today that it becomes difficult to do anything but be distracted by social media, and this causes our critical thinking to slow down, while in the past, critical thinking was high because the only distractions were someone else’s new opinion (3).

Many writers, both creative and critical, have changed our societies views today by creating stories that the world had not seen, and adores now.The following authors helped do this during their time of writing, and they are…

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is the creator and author of Sherlock Holmes. This series is one that changed the world of crime-writing books and the genre in general (5). This series allows for creative writers around the world to find a new way to write, and the audience that enjoyed reading and now watching and reading the series sill exists because of how entertaining and fun the show can be (6).

Fyodor Dostoyevsky, is one of the most impressive authors there is. He created works of arts that explored human physically, mental and psychological ideas and elaborated on them with strong and deep understanding of them (5). One of his most popular books Crime and Punishment talk about the concept of of being alive is worth it, and how one can weight morality. Just that sentence shows you how knowledgable he truly is, and you can see from his writing that he is one of the most critical and free-minded writers (5). He speaks his mind and allows for others to speak and read it with him.

William Shakespeare, is regarded as the best writer of the English language, ever in the world (5). With his artistic works such as hamlet, Macbeth, King lear, and the most romantic of them all, Romeo and Juliet, he is known to be responsible for creating new words in the English language (4). His success caused him to be influential still til today, and he continues to be taught in many English classes, and every class all over the world (4).

As you may see from all of these authors, our world today has been so influenced by these classic writers, and because of them, today we can question and judge anything without others questioning why, because others are doing the same. Our world today has evolved because of these writers, and because their stories continue to live on, even future generations are able to feel and see what thinking in times where there was no global influence and only influence of people around you affects you, and how the stories with no distraction sound and feel (much better and more natural)!

Thank you so much for coming along me on my research journey!
