Shabazz High School

Malcolm Shabazz City High School (established in 1971) is located in the capital city of Madison, Wisconsin in the north central part of the United States of America. Madison is a progressive mid-sized city with around 300,000 residence and is located on a chain for four lakes traditionally called Dejope (in the indigenous Ho-Chunk language) and is now referred to as the Yahara Watershed.

Shabazz High School (named after the famous American civil rights leader, Malcolm X, later known as el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz) and has a rich history of community engagement and activism in addition to a project based learning educational model. As a part of that activism we work to educate and motivate students around a variety of social, ethical and community issues. Shabazz is an anti-racist, interconnected, and inclusive learning community where all students can receive the support they need to develop their strengths, find their voice, cultivate their talents, and overcome obstacles or inequities to achieve their goals.

At Shabazz we strive to give students opportunities to engage in authentic experiences, challenges, and projects that exist beyond the traditional four walls of the classroom. We value these opportunities as integral to the learning experience, not just an “extra” or “add on” if time allows. In many cases, students should expect to be given the opportunity and expectation to interact with community partners through workshops in school and field trips in the community. Students may be expected to “do the doing” as opposed to simply discussing what can or should be done in relation to an academic topic. Students will often be creating actual projects related to topics in class to demonstrate their learning [through a Project Based Learning (PBL) model] as opposed to paper assessments.

Shabazz emphasizes non-traditional school activities to promote engagement and rich learning experiences.

  • Community-based experiential education
  • Outdoor adventure education
  • Project-based learning
  • Service learning opportunities

We’re so excited and honored to be a part of the Butterfly Effect community!
