blog post #2 – sustainability and complications

As I stated in my first post my action will address Development Goal 15, life on land. We will run a bottle drive, do a park clean-up and recycle the bottles at Return It Depo. Then we will send the money we raised to the Wildlife Rescue Association of BC, the bottles we collect are being kept from ending up in landfills, we are cleaning parks, the money gets sent to a good cause and we get to tell people why we are collecting them.

Some of the complications that may come up in this action are:

  • Getting people to participate (give bottles)
  • Figuring out the logistics of the collection
  • Storing the bottles once collected
  • Transporting bottles (we can’t drive)

This action is sustainable since:

  1. A park cleanup prevents pollution from accumulating and keeps the park healthy
  2. Help preserve wildlife as we are donating the money to a sustainable cause which supports wildlife
  3. Giving the bottles a new life by recycling them

This action provides opportunities for:

  • The animals we are raising money for so that they can live happy safe and healthy lives
  • The wildlife technicians by funding them to properly care for the animal while maintaining a living wage
  • The bottles we recycle to have a new purpose instead of ending up in a garbage mound
  • Us, my partners and I, to be a part of our community and learn how to organize and execute a multistep fundraiser instead of just part taking in one.

  1. Hi Zoe,
I really enjoyed reading your genuine and elaborate blog post! I loved how you are doing an action project that will have a benefit on a global level. For example, I love how you are spreading awareness on the global issue of climate change and the consequences of it. We may all be unconsciously negatively impacting climate change, so it will be helpful to know how to avoid it. For example, we may walk past litter, we may drive to school, and we may forget to properly recycle our garbage. Some questions I have for you are: how does climate change impact animals? How does climate change affect humans? How much of our recycling gets recycled? What are some of the most impactful ways to stop climate change?
Here are some resources to help your action project (all sources are peer-reviewed):
