Blog Post #1 – Separating the student from the person: why is academic validation so sought after, and for more reasons than to pursue higher education?

Semester 1 Inquiry: This semester, I will be exploring the concept of academic validation, and why it is so strongly tied to the young person’s ego. What has caused this phenomenon and why?

The concept of academic validation extends beyond the realm of school alone. It carries over into everyday life and the principles of self-esteem, falsely indicating a future that holds little to no validation in the workforce. However, it’s only fair to acknowledge academic rigour in the form of validating these efforts and promoting worth ethic. With no other prescriptive method of promoting work ethic in the school environment, the school system and government promote the distribution of letters tied to a percentage point.

From a scientific perspective, what in the brain promotes the endorphins associated with grades? This question is incredibly open-ended and subjective as each individual has experienced the feeling of academic validation or bribery of some sorts, a strange control phenomenon put out by teachers and parents. Nevertheless, it isn’t all terrible and daunting. Starting with a scientific explanation and helping to expand general knowledge of this relatable topic will provide people with reasons why they may be compelled to academically pursue with such rigour, and possible next steps to detaching their identity from it.

Thank you for reading, and I hope this topic resonates with an aspect of your life that you find important!
