Blog Post #1 – Project Topic Description; The Impact of Mental Health On Adolescents

For this semester’s Inquiry Project, I decided to focus on the impact of mental health disorders on the academic performance, social interactions and overall well-being of high school students.

Mental health is an ongoing issue individuals worldwide face daily. Research shows that 70% of mental health disorders emerge during adolescence and young adulthood. This issue impacts youth worldwide in more ways than one and is finally being discussed in schools. Mental health is a topic which deeply resonates with me, since I have been directly and indirectly affected by it throughout my life. Since I was in middle school, I have always been curious about how mental health could impact a person’s day-to-day life. Could it affect their work ethics and grades? Can it cause them to lose friendships or distance from the people they care about? Since then, I have always been curious about how these “disorders” specifically impact the way adolescents and teens live their lives.

Most teens may not believe it, but almost everyone faces some form of mental “disorder” in their lifetime. The world has always portrayed mental health as something to be ashamed of, or something so intense that it’s unfixable. This causes people to possess a feeling of failure and helplessness. Throughout high school, I have finally begun to understand the impact of mental health, however, I have always wondered what the reasoning and physiological factors behind it are.

When I began highschool, I started to notice that more and more people around me faced some form of a mental health “disorder”. Whether this was due to academic stress, extracurricular performance, social media, friendships or other relationships, there was always something causing students to feel stressed.

Through my inquiry posts, I hope to gain a better understanding of the various effects of mental health and discover coping strategies to work through these challenges. I hope to find information that can be useful for other students and build awareness of the impacts of mental health.

I hope you enjoy reading my future blog posts!
