Hello everyone! My name Amy Zhang, or Zhang Aimi. One thing about me that surprises others is that my name has the same pronunciation and meaning in both the languages I speak. The meaning, in case you were wondering, is “loved by all around the world” which is slightly ironic considering my very small social circle.
I’m currently 17 years old and live in Coquitlam, B.C. I’m a senior at Dr. Charles Best Secondary and this is my third year taking this course. I took this course because I had never heard of anything like it before, and continued because it’s a space where I get to do my favorite hobby; writing. All my previous projects were in the story section, and my future projects too (at least that’s the plan) so it’s pretty obvious that of the three prongs of Butterfly Effect, I am most interested in Story.
I’m very passionate about writing because it’s a place to explore feelings and scenarios without real consequences. However, a major struggle of mine is the fear that no one will read my work, AND the fear that someone will read my work – basically fearing obscurity and judgement at the same time. Most of my characters have a mix of traits or experiences of mine and traits that I want, making them very precious to me.
This year I barely have any free time between my studies and university and scholarship applications. While I love writing, creative writing is very different from answering personal questions. Aside from writing, I am also interested in STEM, mostly inspired by my parents who both have jobs in STEM fields. My goal is an engineering program at University of British Columbia or University of Calgary.
This is my cat, Michonne, who has been somewhat effective at reducing my stress. Isn’t she adorable?
I also have fewer extracurricular activities this year, since I quit Piano and graduated from the Confucius Institute. I hope to return to Piano once I’m less busy. I still lead Girls in Robotics which is always on the lookout for more members! This year we’re hoping to do a mock WRO competition.
Thank you for reading and I look forward to chatting about your projects 🙂
It’s great to meet you! I love that your name has the same pronunciation and meaning in both languages you speak—what a beautiful meaning, too.
It’s really cool that you’ve been able to combine your love for writing with this course, and I totally get that struggle of both wanting people to read your work and being afraid of the judgment that might come with it. It’s a relatable feeling, especially for writers who put a lot of themselves into their characters and stories. But it’s awesome that you’re channeling your creativity into such meaningful work.Michonne sounds adorable, and I bet she’s great company during stressful times—pets really do help! I hope you’ll be able to return to Piano soon too once things calm down a bit.
Good luck with everything, and I’m looking forward to hearing more about your writing and projects! 😊
