Hi all, and welcome back to my blog. As you know, my action project surrounds the idea of school systems and how putting effort back into the community through younger schools has an impact. If you’ve been following along, you know I haven’t had the opportunity to do much lately with the school I usually volunteer with; however, I have received news that next week there will be a movie night for me to help out with. I am very excited to see some familiar faces and catch up with other common volunteers at this event. I recently volunteered with a different school in the community with my Leadership course.
We successfully provided rocks and paints for the Tree of Hearts: Heart and Soul network for a Share a HeART program. Assisting in the planning and execution of the rock painting, with a heart on one side and an encouraging word on the other, we provided over 50 rocks, which were two split classes, to them. These rocks were delivered to seniors in the community this Valentine’s Day.
It was challenging to have the younger groups first as they required a bit more instruction and one-on-one help, but we got it done in time. We were provided with a blow dryer to speed up the process which was over two days. The first day to plan their designs and paint the background colours, and the second to add a heart and word. Some students had difficulty painting the heart shape, so we helped by lightly outlining one with a pencil for them to paint over. Other students had difficulty spelling their words, so we went through the same procedure.
I have talked with my teacher who received feedback from the elementary school acknowledging the other volunteers and I’s work. My teacher has asked me if I would be interested in doing more programs with them, to which I replied absolutely! I am not sure what will happen next or when with this school, but as I said in the beginning, I will be doing a movie night next week!
Thank you so much for reading my post,
Claire
hi claire
this sounds like such a fun project but also like quite a bit of work. I love how unique this idea is I don’t think I have seen someone do this action before, I think it is an amazing way of getting involved with the community young and old, I bet the elderly people loved the rocks❤️.
good luck, I excited to see what you do next.
