Blog Post #4

Hello and welcome to my Blog Post #4! For this blog post, I chose to further research my main inquiry question about how fashion has changed and developed throughout history and how that impacts us. To answer my question well, my second inquiry question is about understanding what makes clothing popular or fashionable. This will help me know who or what decides something is fashionable and help me understand what influences these changes to occur.

Most commonly, “popular culture” influences a lot of change in the fashion industry (1). Seeing celebrities wearing certain clothing or acting a certain way influences us to do the same. We often try to emulate their behaviour and actions or emulate their style. When new celebrities become popular or new styles are introduced, the clothes they wear often become most remembered. Additionally, fashion trends also cause fashion culture to change over time. Fashion trends occur when a specific design, colour or style becomes popular. This leads to a majority of people trying to replicate and accentuate those things (2). In most situations, cultural, economic and social changes start most trends (2). Because of trends, certain clothing becomes popular and fashionable. When popular brands release new clothing, many people find it necessary to buy those specific items right away. This helps make clothes more popular and fashionable to various audiences. Most brands are able to gain a lot of fame if they know their audience, understand and keep a unique selling point, and keep things fresh (3). This helps them gain a positive reputation which benefits them in the long run. Moreover, when clothing is easily accessible and at a good price point, more people want to purchase those specific items. When a majority of people buy a certain thing, those specific clothing items become significantly popular and fashionable extremely quickly.

In conclusion, the key causes that make clothing fashionable and popular are usually pop culture and fashion trends. This is because people are often influenced by what they see. Seeing celebrities doing certain things, causes others to want to emulate that behaviour. In addition to this, seeing your favourite artist, or character in a movie wearing something unique also causes you to feel like replicating what they are doing.

  1. Hi Ishani,

Great Blog Post! It caught my eye since the topic is different and I really enjoy learning about fashion too! I like how you touched on pop culture and reflected on the impact celebrities have on pop culture and the influence they have on the clothes we choose to wear over time. I liked the picture you included near the end of your Blog Post, since it shows a model that has a great impact on fashion culture. I would have loved to hear some more specific examples of when a celebrity made an impact on the clothes we wear. I was wondering, do different types of marketing and promotion have a big influence on the clothes we wear?

  3. Hello Ishani,
This was a really interesting blog post, i like how you pointed out people wanting to be like or emulate celebrities through fashion, it was thought provoking.I think it could be interesting to look into how social media has changed how fast items become popular/uncool. Maybe to compare what trend cycles look like a few decades ago vs now , and the impact that has on not only the fashion world but things like the environment and encouraging consumerism. Here are some links that could be helpful for your next blog post.

  5. Hello Ishani,
I found your blog post very interesting and easy to follow along with. I find it very interesting on how fashion trends change and how people are influenced by them. I really like your point about clothing being popular because they want to follow certain trends that celebrities do, and how the effects of social media can make something unpopular just as fast that it became a trend. The picture included at the end was really cool, it shows a model who has a great impact on coming and going fashion trends. I would love to see how fashion trends are affected by marketing and competing brands. I included some links I hope you find useful!
