My name is James Zhang, I’m in grade 9 and I go to Dr. Charles Best Secondary School in Coquitlam. This is my first year taking Social Responsibility.
Some things to know about are that I love soccer, programming, technology-related, and listening to music. I started trying coding with Scratch in grade 2, I had trouble advancing my learning because I was self-taught and young and didn’t know how to start or continue anything. Later I changed from Scratch to Python, I was no longer using simple blocks but actual lines of code giving me more freedom, I had a lot of time during the pandemic so I was able to advance far. Recently I started taking actual programming lessons and I was able to skip most of the lessons at the beginning.. I started soccer in grade 4 but stopped soon after because of the pandemic and restarted in grade 8 after the pandemic had faded away mostly. Whenever I have time I try to go outside and practice, but now that school has started it’s harder to find time.
Our school was given a tour around Dr. Charles Best where teachers would talk about the subject their offering. My friend and I were interested in Social Responsibility because it was I hoped to meet and connect with new people. I’m unsure where this course will take me, but I know it will be positive and fun.
In my free time I like to read books, play videos games and just being with my friends or talking with them online. High school is making it harder to find free time, it’s making me appreciate the bit of free time I have right now as I try to balance all my schoolwork with my extracurriculars. I have soccer practices and games, robotics meetings, flute classes, performance, and programming classes. The only free day I have is Monday which will also soon be taken up. My favourite book is Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir, a science fiction novel that takes place in space and the future. I’ve always seen reviews saying a book will have you hooked from the very first sentence, but never experienced it until reading Project Hail Mary. I was truly hooked once I had read the first sentence
In the future my goal is to become a software engineer, my dad is one and he sometimes gives me a small task to help him test something, this made me love the job and I wish to become a software engineer one day. I’ve always been interested in technology and coding ever since which is why I want to become one.
