Research Round 3:How does slang impact the evolution of language

I just did my second round of research on how words are gained, lost and changed over time. In this round of research I am going specifically to learn how slang has affected language in different ways for example in the 21st century when the internet and SMS text rose.

Social media  has really impacted language since it makes the information travel very fast [1].Texting slang is constantly being updated and adopting new words and abbreviations since the internet varies and can be very specialized for particular groups or users of a certain platform [1].Technology has also played a significant role in altering modern day slang across cultures [2].The widespread use of internet and social media has made it easier for people to communicate with others from different regions and backgrounds that leads to greater mixing of languages [2].Technology has affected language through creation of variations of languages that have emerged specifically in online contexts [2].

As societies changed through wars and migrations, the English language grew similar with many other languages [2]. It goes hand in hand that if a society develops new slang expressions are born [2]. The records shows that slang was first used  around the 16th century, but this is not certain as it is more of a spoken language as so it could be of much earlier [3]. Nowadays slang is used much more frequently, with the influence of technology having a great effect on the use of slang as some people think it has positive effect on English language, while others think it has negative effect [3].The origin of slang was first recorded by some of the famous playwrights such as Thomas Middleton, William Shakespeare and Thomas Dekker around the 16th century [3].Slang is also used by teenagers as they interact that is not sometimes possible to be understood by their parents and other adults, but can only be well understood among themselves and through this some words get picked and used in English.

  1. Hi Samantha,
Great post! It’s so true that slang seeps into our everyday conversations and even changed the way we communicate. Also, I liked how you talked about the first recordings of slang in the 16th century. I researched more about it and found out that it used to have a bad reputation because it was used by criminals. Here’s more information on it: https://hohbeinhallie.wordpress.com/history/

  2. Hi Samantha,

I loved your blog! It is so interesting to see how slang can has become much common throughout the recent years compared to before. I know you mentioned that is has both positive and negative effects, but an idea is to research more about these effects. Understanding if slang has created a more positive or negative effect on recent generations would be interesting. Here’s a few resources to help your research!

Good luck on your research and I am excited to read more about it!

  3. Hi Samantha! My name is Vea and I love your post. It caught my eye right away and I was very interested.
Languages all around the world are very cool to me and I never thought about the use of slang or how often I say it until now. I find that your information on the development of how people communicate over social media and SMS is a great way to see the change from generation to generation. I think it’s funny how saying something that sounds bad like “break a leg” to someone actually means a positive thing. One thing that you could consider in your research can be to reflect on your own slang and how you yourself have picked up on a couple phrases. I would love to hear about slang from Kenya! Anyways, I think that this is a smart topic which affects everyone in their daily lives. You could include some examples on how exactly has slang replaced parts of the old English language and to dig deeper on the role of social media in it.
