Blog Post #5 – Research Round 3

Hi everyone! This is my third round of research on my inquiry topic this semester Fashion Throughout History.

  1. Why does fashion change over time?

Well, the simple answer to this is that people change throughout time. Many fashion designers like to include emotion into fashion. You will see this when you go to fashion shows and red carpet events. An example could be, an outfit with many accessories, an outgoing hair style, or various different colours. (4) Another reason more casual styles of fashion (also known as street style on social media), is heavily influenced by celebrities and influencers. (1) An example of this is oversized puffer coats which is seen worn by many people in public and is a great unisex trend that is also very easy to dress up and dress down. Puffer coats are also often seen worn by celebrities and influencers in fall and winter on the street. (3)

2. What is the history of fashion?

Fashion is one of the most popular timeless things to exist. Fashion can also tell many stories as well (3) (history being one example). Fashion also is very popular for cultural reasons which is what different cultures, religions, races (and basically anything you can imagine) used to express themselves and their meanings and beliefs. (5)

3. Fashion, then vs. now

Something you may not know about fashion is that it is cyclical. What is cyclical? Cyclical is basically a repeating cycle of anything but in this case, fashion. (6) It responds to the time and culture that it existed in and it is overall a constant changing trend that changes yearly, monthly, and even weekly. (3) When fashion is in a cyclical phase it is fully coming from the time period it originally came from. (6)  An example of this could be the 80’s style being a trend in 2019 and 2020, the 90’s style trending in 2021 and the 00’s style trending in 2022 and 2023. (5) However, with the older styles trending there is still the new modern day style which is very simplistic (also called minimal) with simple shades like white, grey, and black with muted shades of all the colours as well. This also can take inspiration from modern day home decor as well. (7)

Thank you for reading my blog post! I hope you found it interesting or learned something new!

  1. Hey Hanna!

Your post was so interesting and easy to understand. I love how gave us examples that we see in todays world all around us. Now that this kind of sums up your inquiry question, my one question for you is, how do you see fashion changing in 10 or 15 years? With old trends being brought back do you think new will continue to show up?

Heres a link that might help! https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/20190410-what-will-fashion-be-like-20-years-from-now

Best of luck in your future research,
