In the past week, Mai and I have met up at Town Centre Park again and picked up garbage for 30 minutes. It was a similar experience to our previous garbage pick up. We started from the parking lot, walked along the side walks, and headed towards the busier areas like where Ricky Point ice cream truck is. It was definitely less of a shock compared to last time; there were similar amounts of garbage out.
The success for our run this time is that we picked up a good amount of garbage. We did not take any pictures, but our big trash bag was about half full. Rather than going very far or deep in areas like near the edge of fences and into bushes, we were able to pick up garbage just as we walked. For instance, many were on the grass by the side walk, and some others were near the benches by the skate park and sidewalks.
Once again, our challenge is finding the time where we both are free to complete our task. The previous time we only did 30 minutes because I had plans after and could not do a longer period of time. We also tried to go again this week, but there always were other plans that came in the way. As a solution to overcome this problem, we definitely have been texting each other more often about our availabilities. We have texted each other multiples times this week to arrange a time and go pick up garbage. Though we had to cancel the one which was supposed to happen today because of an important event that came up for Mai, we plan to go sometime next week after school.
For the next garbage pick up, which hopefully will happen next week, we will be going to the Glen Eagle, Scott Creak, and Eagle Ridge area. We chose this area because they are near the Coquitlam central area where many activities take place, which could lead to potentially a larger amount of garbage out. We also wanted to go there because they are all schools. Since we have only been to parks so far, we also want to see what the situation is like for schools and the areas near them, and complete our share and contributing to improve the environment.
Hi Jade,
It’s great how you and Mai are contributing so meaningfully to your community with the resources you have. In the future, maybe you could volunteer with environmental charities, or do a garbage pick-up contest? Of course, those activities may require even more time management and planning, so kudos to you for your achievements this time. I have a question, though, if this is an action blog post, why is it tagged under Inquiry Based Learning?
