R3:Self control

Self-control is one of the most important skills that one needs in their life. Self-control is simply a process for self-regulating our behavior in pursuit of our goals[1].There are three types of self-control which are: impulse control, emotional control and movement control[3].I don’t think am the only one who struggles with controlling myself mostly my emotions as a teenager. This is not the end since we can simply develop and strengthen our self-control skills[2].The following are the steps to which this can be possible:

  • Avoid temptations: this way you are sure that you are not using your self-control before it is really needed. You can achieve this by simply just doing anything to take your mind of your temptation like taking a nature walk[2].
  • Plan ahead and focus on one goal at a time. This  will help you to maintain your willpower and put all your energy on one thing[2].
  • You can also meditate and remind yourself of the consequences. Meditating can help  you to relax  and strengthen your self-control muscles. It also helps to slow down thoughts and help you to control your impulses which may get in the way of you developing your skill. Reminding yourself of the consequences of not having self-control will motivate you and help you stay focused on your goals[2].
  • Most of all, practice self-control because it was said that practice makes perfect. When you are training yourself  on it you should always practice it often for you to strengthen  the skill[2].

Self-control being a skill has some benefits. One of the most important one is that it simply helps you enhance your decision-making capacity. It controls your emotional happiness and also improves your mental health and many more[4].Now in this world we live in, anything with an advantage obviously doesn’t lack a disadvantage .Self-control also has some of its disadvantages. It may sometimes lead to regrets in some decisions that we make. It restricts our emotional experiences among others[5].This is one of the skills in life that most people struggle with me being one of them. It is really fulfilling when I learn about it and share it with others as well. I really love this topic and hope that you will like it as well. Thank you for reading it.

  1. Hello Christine,

What an interestingly complex inquiry topic! Self-control is something that is often overlooked, but crucially important in the grand scheme of things. I specifically enjoyed your piece on temptations and how self-dialogue relating to need is often required to make the smartest decision. I would love to know how the influence of others affects our self-control, and whether peer pressure plays a vital role in how we make decisions relating to self-regulation. What are some of the consequences about being easily influenced on our self-control rating? Nevertheless, fantastic job so far. Keep informing!

  2. Hey Christine,
This is such a great blog post! I also agree that self-control is one of the most important traits to have because it can help you make better decisions. A question I have is if there are any mental illnesses related to poor self-control habits? If so, how can you overcome those illnesses? Nevertheless, I look forward to reading your future posts.

Below are a couple of resources that talk about situations where self-control can be difficult which might help you with research.
