To answer my question; What’s the role of the media in current social movements? I decided to research three current social movements and how media impacts each of them specifically. Here are the questions to guide me through my research:
Feminism:
- What role has social media played in promoting feminist activism?
- How has the media contributed to the mainstreaming of feminist issues and concepts?
- What are some examples of successful feminist movements that were aided by media coverage?
- What are some ways in which the media has been criticised for its coverage of feminist movements?
Anti-racist movement:
- What role has social media played in amplifying anti-racist voices and promoting activism?
- How has the media contributed to the visibility and understanding of systemic racism?
- What are some examples of successful anti-racist movements that were aided by media coverage?
- What are some criticisms of the media’s coverage of anti-racism movements, and how can these be addressed?
For Environmentalism:
- How has the media covered environmental issues and activism over the years?
- What role has social media played in promoting ecological/environmental awareness?
- How has the media contributed to shaping public opinion and policy regarding environmental issues?
- What are some examples of successful ecological movements that were aided by media coverage?
- How has the media been criticized for its coverage of environmental issues, and what can be done to address these concerns?

This question will bring more awareness of current social movements’ issues to individuals, and make them develop a more critical thinking about activism and how much the media can change our perception of both activists and the issues themselves. For example, it will allow people to understand how the media influences our views on police brutality.

I love your topic of choice as it is such an important movement and I believe needs more exposure. I like how you split up each of your sub questions, writing short and concise points you wish to research. I think you chose very good sub questions that cover numerous aspects of the media’s role in social movements.
I think another important aspect to think about in this question is: how has mainstream media silenced some social movements.
By this I mean mainstream channels, such as news channels, or social media shadow banning or hiding specific social movements.
