Blog Post 5-Coastal Cleanup

  1. Where are you with your action? (e.g. what involvement have you had so far? Describe with examples)

Since it snowed these past few weeks, instead of going to the beach I did two pickup days in Mundy Park and Rocky Point Park. This was a very effective because the snow had partially melted so any garbage that had been dropped on the ground was buried in the snow. Once it was melting, the garbage was a lot and easy to spot. Additionally, I sorted through my own family’s bins and put garbage that was misplaced into the right bins. One of the most important reasons to use the right bin is that it helps divert waste from landfill. Recyclable goods can be reused and reduce our reliance on new materials, preserve our natural resources, and reduce the negative impact of waste on our environment.

2. What are some successes that you have had? Provide specific examples.

Some successes that I’ve had are collecting three garbage bags of litter and cleaning up two different areas. By doing so, I tidy surroundings, reduce health risks, which results in a healthier community. Along with this, I encouraged my family to pick up any garbage they see on their walks and hikes, this is a success because promotes sustainability.

3.  What are some challenges that you have faced? Have you been able to overcome them? If so, how? Provide specific examples. If not, can you problem-solve some ideas that might work for next time or if a similar situation arises? Again, provide specific examples.

Some challenges that I have faced is that the more garbage I pick up, even the heavy-duty garbage have the tendency to rip. This was very difficult while I was walked however, I overcame this by double bagging. While I was skeptical because this means more plastic use, I problem solved here as well by throwing out the trash with the first bag, and then using the clean bag that I used over it, to sort out all the cans and bottles into and got those ready for the bottle drive. This way nothing goes unused.

4.) What are you doing next and why?

Since I have collected lots of trash, I did my part in sorting through it and taking out any recyclables. This week however, instead of taking these to the recycling depot or bins, I will bag them and have them ready for pickup. In my neighbourhood the local kids’ soccer team collects these to fundraise for their team. This way, I am making a positive impact in multiple ways. Something I would also like to do next is to supports local recycling efforts and sustainability. I would do this by finding other people or organizations with initiatives.B.C.'s blue box recycling system to accept more items, primarily single-use plastics | CBC News
