Blog Post #2

My inquiry question is: What impact does school have on its students’ mental health?

Here are my three steps for research:

  1. What mental health disorders are linked to school stress?

By doing this, I hope to become more educated on the topic. I will have a variety of different sources to learn from and this information should hopefully lead to addressing my question.

2. What is it about school that impacts students’ mental health?

If we know what causes the decline in students’ mental health, what steps can be taken to help with and reduce those impacts?

3. What can schools do to help improve students’ mental health?

I’m hoping that by researching this subquestion, I can find solutions for students’ school related mental health struggles.

This question will have implications to other individuals and/or my community because I think it is a question that quite a few people can relate to as well as wonder about. I hope that by finding some answers, I can help some students who are struggling.

These are some sources that I’m hoping will help answer my question:

  1. Hi Aniela,
This is a very interesting topic as it is so relevant. Im exited to see what exactly about school affects so many students mental health. Is it the homework ? Or maybe for some students the social aspect? Here is a link that could help you with your research, it takes an intersectional point of view in talking about how self identity can affect students mental health in school which i think could be interesting to look into.I look forward to your next blog post !

  2. Hey Aniela,
This is a really great topic to research as a high-school student and very relevant. I am excited to read your inquiry as you continue to answer these questions. There are many aspects to school that can harm someone’s mental health, and it’s personal from student to student. Something that would be interesting to include in your research is how a students lives outside of school can better the way they deal with stress from school. Doing sports, spending time with family, friends or pets. How does one’s upbringing or outside life affect the way they feel at school? Does a push for academic success have a negative or positive impact on mental health?

I think this will be a helpful resource for you, it talks in depth about providing critical support and services and that they need to be comprehensive and community wide.

  3. Hi Aniela,

I loved your topic because it will be helpful to us. We all go to school, so it is important to know how school impacts our mental health. Some questions I have are: does school positively impact our school too? What parts of school impact our mental health the most (based on statistics) : homework, peer pressure, etc?

    Some resources I recommend:

  4. Hi Aniela,
Great topic! I feel like this is a very broad topic that can take several posts to research about, so I like how you were able to divide it into 3 steps and include the most important aspects of the topic. Even though I don’t much about the relationship between school and mental health, I notice how too much stress, like having too many tests on the same week, can deteriorate my own mental health. Connecting to your first research step, do you think that mental health disorders develop because of school stress, or that they just get worse because of school stress? Maybe both? 5. Hi Aniela,

Your Inquiry question is really interesting and it is something we have all thought about at least once throughout the school year! A question I have is, Is it homework that impacts mental health or is it rather our peers that may be the bigger impact? Another question I have is, How did online school during COVID-19 impact our mental health? Did it make some students’ mental health better, or worse?

A link that I found that may be helpful is:

    https://highfocuscenters.pyramidhealthcarepa.com/the-effects-of-online-learning-on-a-teens-mental-health/

It focuses on how the use of technology and online school had a negative effect of students’ mental health. I hope you found this helpful!

I can’t wait to see your progression with your research 🙂
