Step One Blog Post – Action Post: Values Activity & Aligning this with Global Millennium Goals
1.Three most important values:
1.Integrity
- Integrity
- Competence
- Personal Growth
2. Three least important values:
- Tradition
- Spiritual Growth
- Risk
3.) Do you agree with the results? What do these values mean to you?
I do agree with my results for all my important values. Integrity is a highly valued trait that I always strive to better in myself. It means to live in accordance to your deepest values, to be honest and keep your word. To me this means living an honest life and being your best self, honest to you. Next, competence to me is being able to develop skills when I encounter unfamiliar or challenging situations. Competencies help me draw and build upon what I know, how I think and what I can do. Finally, personal growth is a major part of my life, it means lots that results in learning to better control my emotions and negative thoughts. Overcoming procrastination and being open to new things in life, having a growth mindset. It allows me to find peace and contentment.
For my least important values, I disagree that risk isn’t important to me because I believe that taking risks makes you braver, stronger, and more confidant. I do however agree that tradition isn’t as important to me. As I do understand that tradition brings comfort, I think it enables to blindly follow the past, so you don’t have to do the hard work of critical thinking in the present. Lastly, I agree that spiritual growth isn’t a value of main importance to me because I don’t think I am quite developed in that aspect. I don’t believe in a higher power so I find that spirituality can come in a lot of different ways, to which I am not in tune to.
4. Research United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
a) Which one aligns with your values most?
The sustainable development goal that aligns with my values the most is to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development. This aligns with my values of integrity, competence and personal growth. It aligns with integrity because it represents having strong moral principles. Competence is reflected because it’s the combination of training, skills, experience and knowledge that a person has and their ability to apply them to perform a task. So, to better learn how to conserve the oceans. Finally, this reflects my personal growth value because it is to be open to new things in life, having a growth mindset. In this case, having a growth mindset about how we can make things better with marine resources.
- b) Which one is your passion Why? (This may or may be the same as (a))
My passion is the same as a). I am passionate about this topic because I live in British Columbia, the ocean is all around us. I have always lived by the water, so I am compassionate about ocean life as well as all our ocean provides for us. Many species, including seals, dolphins and sea turtles, can get entangled in plastic debris, and fishing nets and lines lost at sea. Most of the entangled animals do not survive, as they cannot get up to the water’s surface to breathe, escape from predators or feed themselves. This is something that I believe us as humans can do much more to solve as a community.
- c) Give one specific action you would like to apply to address this goal. If you are not sure of an action yet, list 2-3 possible actions you might like to start.
So respectively, the action I would like to apply to address this goal is beach/coastal cleanup.
Hi Martina,
This is such a fantastic action project idea! I also believe it’s our job as humans to help the ocean life and to keep our waters clean. Furthermore, as you stated it’s important to grow our mindsets and learn new things in order to contribute to the improvement of marine resources. Below is a link that might help you learn how to make each ocean clean-up more effective.

Nevertheless, I wish you the best with this project and look forward to reading more posts!
Hey Martina,
I loved reading about your three most important values because I think integrity and personal growth are my top values. I did something similar in this class last year where my group and I did nature cleanups. I wish you luck because it really does make a difference in our community and I found it fun to do last year!
