Blog Post 1- Values Activity & Aligning this with Global Millennium Goals

Hello everyone! Here is my first action post.

  1. What are your 3 most important values and your 3 least important values?

My 3 most important values are compassion, opportunity, and helping. My 3 least important values were tradition, courage, and competence.

2. Do you agree with the results? Do you think the statements are good descriptions of the values? Do you think there are some values missing?  What do your 3 important values mean to you?

I agree with what I got as my most important values but, I agreed with more than three statements so it was hard to narrow down. That also made it hard to pick three statements that were least important to me. Next, I think all the values were there. I couldn’t think of any that had been missed; just the same value in different wording. Furthermore, I see compassion as an important quality because to have a healthy relationship with anyone both people need to understand what struggles they are facing. Second, Opportunity is a big one for me because I know that I have been given so much of it in my life. I think it’s extremely beneficial to recognize that and seize that opportunity. Third, I think of helping as a natural instinct for everyone but at times it isn’t. I think that given the opportunity to help, especially if it doesn’t cost you anything, you should take it and make someone else’s day. A small act of kindness may mean a lot to a person who really needs it.

Can you describe a situation where you put into action one or more of the values most important to you? What was the result?

An example of one of my values could be when I got my art published in a magazine. I had access to materials to make the piece and I saw an ad for artists willing to create art about identity so I took the opportunity. I didn’t expect for it to be published but fortunately, my work paid off. I tried something new and out of my comfort zone and it worked out really well.

3. Imagine some future situations where you could put your values into action.

    1. Value: Helping
    2. Future situation: In the future, I will be there to listen and give advice to friends who aren’t feeling well. This demonstrates how I can help others.

4.) Research United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
a) Which one aligns with your values most?

I think sustainable cities and communities aligns with my values the best because my focus on helping, opportunity and compassion is, in my mind, regarding my local community.

b) Which one is your passion Why?

My passion is good health and well-being. This is because I want my community to be as successful as it can be and that starts with good mental and physical health. It’s tough to know what to do when someone is struggling to take care of themselves so I think it’s a good idea to promote good health in order to inspire that person.

c) Give one specific action you would like to apply to address this goal. If you are not sure of an action yet, list 2-3 possible actions you might like to start.

My action will be raising money for a local art center that provides art supplies/ lessons for people with mental health issues needing a form of expression or relaxation. The money will be raised from art commissions I will do and it will be covering the costs of art supplies and entrance fees at the art center.

  1. Hi Shieva,
This is a very interesting action project and somewhat linked to my inquiry question. Your post was fun to read. A recommendation I have for your fundraiser is selling pieces of art you/students made since this is related to art.

  2. Hi Shieva,

Your action project seems very interesting, and I love how you incorporated art, a form of self-expression, into improving health and a person’s well-being. You could also try promoting physical health if you wanted to.

Looking forward to reading your future posts,
    Karen Zoulau
