Many people may sometimes ask themselves how the rise in water affects climate. The rise in sea level is an increase in the level of the world’s oceans due to the effects of global warming.

The rise in waters affect climate by;

the rise in water has a great impact on changing the climate. Sea levels can rise in two different ways in relation to climate change.

  1. Due to global temperature sea waters expand which occupies the space in the waters basin causing water levels to rise.(1) The heat is added to the ocean and ocean waters expand, sea level rises, flooding the coast. Also, marine life that is sensitive to increasing water temperatures struggles to survive. (2)
  2. Melting of ice overland, which then increases waters to the oceans. (1) Over the past 100 years mountain glaciers, arctic glaciers, and Greenland’s ice sheets have decreased in size. With less water trapped in glaciers and ice sheets, there is more water in the ocean and the sea level is higher. Melting ice that is already in the sea does not cause a rise in sea levels. (2)

One way the oceans affect weather and climate is by keeping the planet warm. The majority of the sun radiation is absorbed by the oceans specifically around the equator where the ocean acts as a massive, heat retaining solar panel.(3)

Thermal expansion and melting ice each contributed about half of the recent sea level rise.(2)

  1. I find climate change and sea waters rising very interesting. I think it is something that needs to be recognized and talked about more. We only have one earth so I think that it is important that we take care of it.

  2. Hey Denis, great post! I had absolutely no clue that there was more than one way that water levels could rise. Before reading your post, I was under the impression that the only way the water levels rose was when ice caps in the coldest regions of our planet melted, I didn’t even know that water could expand due to increasing temperatures. Cool stuff!
