Hello everyone,
My name is Karen (as you would’ve already known if you read my past posts), and I am in Grade 9 studying at Charles Best Secondary School this year. This is my ‘PA-MOJA’ Week Post:
Personal Life:
What Happens When You are Sick?
When I am sick, a lot of unique things happen to me. It usually first starts off with a bit of a runny nose. It’s really not that fun when you get sick, but it is a learning experience. Your body learns how to fight off the infection once they finish all of the bacteria. After the runny nose, mythroat starts to hurt. And I’m fine with runny noses, stuffy noses, sneezing and even coughing but not sore throats. My throat is very sensitive and sometimes gets dry in the night, so having sore throats are the worst for me. One time, when I was with my mother driving to the supermarket, I didn’t have any water with me, and I had a terrible sore throat. And let me tell you, that was probably the worst experience of a sore throat I had ever had in my entire life, like it was really horrific. My throat felt so sandy, it felt like a desert. I craved for water so bad. Every single time I swallowed, it felt like a living nightmare. Then, all of a sudden, I felt like I was about to throw up. I almost threw up in the car if my mother had not stopped immediately. Thankfully, I didn’t throw up and lasted through all of the suffering and torture when we made it to the store and bought a bottle of water. I drank so much water, that I had to use the bathroom every couple of minutes. When it is night, the symptoms are at their worst. When I go to bed, it takes a couple of hours to actually fall asleep because my throat constantly begs for water. When my parents notice that I’m still awake, they come to my room to check my temperature, and get me to take medicine. Another point, is that I am terrible at taking medication. I always have to cut the pill in half, even though it is already really small. It also takes so long for me to swallow one pill. I hold it in my mouth for so long that it starts dissolving in my mouth before I swallow it. Most of the time, I get anxious and grow self-conscious. I ask myself questions like: “What if I don’t get any sleep tonight?”, “Do I have to see the doctor?”, “Will I need more medicine?”, “Will I need an injection?”, “How long will this last?”, etc. Having a sore throat is a really traumatizing experience for me. But, it’s all for the better, right?
What are Your Career Goals? Why Do You Want to do This?
My career goal is to get an MD Undergraduate degree, complete an internship, and to start working as a doctor. I want to do this because I want to be someone who aids people when they fall ill. I want to be the one leading everyone during emergencies. I also want to be able to save lives, and make a difference in the world. When I was younger, I wanted to become a veterinarian. When I noticed that veterinarians had to deal with stray dogs and aggressive cats, I decided to change my mind because I would easily be hurt when doing my job. I think it was just my obsession with animals and pets that made me want to choose this career path. When i was 10, I actually said that I would much rather not have a job, I would rather just be a mother in a family of 4. I always wished to be older when I was 10. I thought that being older would be so much easier and more fun. The truth is, that it is more fun and exciting, but not much easier. There are more responsibilities you need to take when you get older each passing year. For example, paying a bunch of taxes. You can’t run away.
My Family Life
My family life is usually calm and collected. Most of the time my mother, father and brother are all on their devices and don’t have time to speak with me. The only times we do actually talk are at meal times. Especially when we eat dinner, everyone is there. Towards me, my brother would usually ask me to play video games with him. He always asks to play Minecraft or Roblox, but I rarely play because it’s not my favourite game. My brother also talks about games and plays the games every single hour of the day. It’s kind of turning into an addiction, you could say. My father usually asks me if I finished my homework yet. He always tries to push me to do my study whenever he can. When I haven’t finished my homework, he would get mad, and then he would yell at me. My mother talks to me about how I should distribute time each day in order to get the best grades in class. She constantly tells me to hurry things up, and to think about the possible terrible outcomes of my future. All of this happens in one day. But most of all, my dog always comes up to me smiling, with a toy in his mouth, asking to play fetch with him too. It can get frustrating, but that’s just the way of life.
I hope you enjoyed learning a little something about me! ๐

Dear Karen,
You seem to have a very straightforward and clear path! With your efforts, it can certainly be done.
2 tips I believe can help you in your career path:
1. Ask the fellow family doctor of yours, or medical students how they got where they are. The professionals will be able to give you great insight and perspective!
2. Consider finding volunteer or work experience in this field if you find that it interests you so much. Earlier is always so nice, especially since you are in grade 9, volunteering an hour a week or so is great for experience.
Some things you said were also quite funny, like the phrases following ‘when i was 10, I actually said that I would much rather not have a job’ ๐ I can genuinely picture your several stories mentioned, and I’m not even there, which is great! Wish you well.
Best Regards,
Galicia.
Hi Galicia,
Thanks for giving me some tips on learning more in the medical field. This means a lot to me, I really wish to spend some more time experiencing than guessing.
Thank you,
Karen
