Inquiry post #1 – What does it take to be happy?

Hi! My inquiry question is : What does it take to be happy?

Last year, I got the amazing opportunity to travel to Thailand and Hong Kong. I visited many different places there, and saw a wide variety of lifestyles. I was particularly interested in the lifestyle of the people living on a small island that I visited. Their lives were very simple, and they were without many of the luxuries that we are accustomed to here in Canada. But they were happy, happier than many people I’ve met here. Which made me think, what does it really take to be happy? Is it just a state of mind? Are there certain things you need in your life in order to be happy?

I’ve been thinking about that a lot lately, especially since I’m at that age where it’s time for me to start planning my future. There’s so many paths that I could take, and they each lead somewhere different. I wonder if society’s idea of a successful life will bring me happiness, or if I would find happiness in something different. Because of this, I figured this is the perfect question for me! Not only will it help me out, I hope that I’ll be able to inform others that might be in the same position as me.

Please feel free to leave me any comments or ideas, I love to read them!

  3. Hi Jasmine,
What an interesting question! It is definitely one that I feel like everyone is constantly searching for and defining in their own terms. I also like how your question stemmed from what you saw and experienced, It may give readers another perspective.
Because people are so different, happiness would have a different face depending on the person. I came across these Ted talks that touch on different areas of what it takes to be happy and what happiness means to the presenters. If you get the chance you could check it out!

For your future posts, you could perhaps look into how religion may connect to or influence happiness as we live in a world that was once completely driven by the idea of faith and may have affected people’s views on happiness.
Here’s an article that might help: https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/how_does_religion_affect_happiness_around_the_world

  4. Hi Jasmine I really enjoyed reading your inquiry project. To me happiness is your passion being fulfilled. You see, happiness is absolutely attainable: it takes a little effort or a long effort to be happy. Happiness is what you make it. It is a process and a state of mind.

    1. Hi Joseph! I love that you said “happiness is your passion being fulfilled”. I think your right, and I really appreciate you sharing your perspective.
