Metamorphosis- How Does the Educational System Affect Teenagers?

Hey everyone,

Long time, no post! It’s been a while since I have written a metamorphosis and since this is going to be my final post on the site before post-secondary, I would like to reflect on my experience in Social Responsibility. I have been a part of this wonderful course for my entire 4 years of high school and at first, I’ll admit, it was frightening being in an academic club/course with grade 12’s. However, our little community was very welcoming and always improving as new members join. It’s going to be hard to say good-bye especially after watching this course grow and how we started with only 5 or 6 core members to now expanding to around 20 at Charles Best. Now without any more sappy comments, here is my post!

  1. What challenges did you overcome throughout this inquiry project? How did you go about overcoming these challenges?

Within my inquiry project, I took a different approach of continuing one large question for my final year within the course. Therefore, I had the challenge of finding enough research and keeping my question open-ended. Sometimes I found myself being overly specific for some topics and being able to research forever. Whereas others, were vaguer because reputable sources were hard to come by. To overcome these small obstacles, I tried to think of positive and negative aspects that affect us within our own high school and ask my peers their opinion. Although they might not be a journal article, they have had experience within the education system for at least 10 years and have gathered their own opinions that can be backed up with proof or facts. Using their comments as a starting point, I was able to successfully find sources that furthered their findings and hopefully will make a positive impact.

  1. How did this inquiry change the way you think?

Like all my previous projects, after completing a cycle, it adjusts your mindset to understand and reflect upon your findings. Specifically, within the education system, this question showcased the importance of teachers and the impact they have on all their students. Although we sometimes may take them for granted and speak when they are trying to teach a lesson or grumble when they assign a large project but they are here supporting us. Within my question, I focused more on the curriculum and facilities of schools such as the cafeteria options, and didn’t touch upon the positive or negative aspects of teachers because I believe they help shape us to become successful individuals in society. Through this inquiry, I was able to understand the importance of the people who care and teach us daily and steer away from nitpicking on the gym space or the new curriculum because a good education is determined by what we can accomplish in the future.

  1. How did this investigation impact your future decisions?

Personally, after completing this inquiry question, I feel like I have a full perspective on the importance of our education system and it will impact how I view my post-secondary journey. Therefore, in my upcoming years, I will focus more on the courses I take and my successes instead of the prestige of the university or where my friends attend. Each school has its positives and negatives, but in the long run, if your professors fit your needs, and help you achieve your best than the overall system of your education shouldn’t affect your learning greatly.

  1. What impact will this investigation have on others locally and/or globally?
On a local and global level, I hope this inquiry question help others develop the same mindset I have adapted to where the system may have its flaws, but what you make of the time and your experiences affects your education more. Also, I hope some of my research does make its way into schools such as more physical exercise in the high school curriculum and healthy eating choices within the cafeteria because they would greatly benefit the student population. However, saying these solutions doesn’t assure the change, which is why we need to take a different approach and make the best with what we are offered. Meaning even if the food choices are hamburgers and salads, taking the initiative to pick the salad.

That’s all for me! Once again thank you for everyone for reading my posts and providing very helpful and positive comments. I will miss you all greatly. 🙂
