My inquiry question for this semester is: Why would someone join a cult?
This is not a question of interest to me because I’ve ever been in a cult or want to start one. Rather, I am interested in this subject because I am interested in the psychology of someone’s mindset in a cult, and the manipulation tactics used by cult leaders. I have always been fascinated by psychology, with a leaning towards its darker aspects, and I will be able to find a lot of information on this particular subject. One of my first real introductions to cults was through a book called Seed by Lisa Heathfield. It was a dark and disturbing book from the point of view of a girl growing up in a cult called Seed, and although I can’t say it was a fun read, it did introduce me to a lot of topics in which I have continued to find interest. I hope to learn as much as I can about what goes on in the heads of cult members and end up with a wider understanding of the world.
Hi Ellen,
I think this is such a great question. It would be interesting if you also researched why someone would start a cult and what makes that person so persuasive. The Jonestown Massacre could work as a start for researching. Good luck!
