Cycle 2/Post 1 – Action

Hey everyone!

I’m so excited to start my second cycle of the school year! I’ve decided to continue doing an action project as I really enjoyed the new perspectives and the opportunity for reflection my last cycle gave me. However, this time, I’m going to be starting a new action.

So, let’s get into it!

I completed the values activity and I found that my top three values are Equality, Family, and Helping while my least important values are Tradition, Spiritual Growth, and Innovation. I would say these results make quite a bit of sense to me and they would honestly be the values I would assign myself – even without the activity. Being Iranian, I have seen firsthand what it’s like to be in a country with blatant systemic racism. Travelling to Iran as a child allowed me to question why things are the way they are which portrayed to me how important equality is to me. Additionally, family is a very strong value within my own and within my culture in general. Spending time together, cherishing each other, and appreciating the bond between us are all things my family has actively been doing as long as I can remember. Lastly, I would say that “Helping” is a very evident and prominent value in my life. With the clubs I lead at school and my volunteer jobs, it is clear to see that I very much value helping others.

For this action, I have decided to focus on two United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: Life on Land and Good Health and Well-Being. I believe these two goals match up nicely with my value of “Helping,” and although it might not be obvious at first glance, my “Equality” value as well. As for my action project myself, I’m going to be reflecting on my time spent volunteering at Eagle Ridge Hospital and Manor and the British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. These are both volunteer jobs I’ve had for quite some time now, but I really look forward to analyzing my work done in each place individually and comparing them to one other – hopefully, to reveal more about my values and the reasons why I chose to volunteer at each place.

That’s all for this post! In my next post, I’ll explain in more depth what exactly I do as a volunteer and the sustainability of my action. Thanks for reading! Please leave me any comments or questions below!

  1. I think, as you say, it will be interesting for you to really investigate how and why these organizations that you volunteer for, fit into your values. I’m looking forward to hearing your reflections throughout the semester. It will be interesting to hear about the different kinds of things you do during your volunteering as well. Thanks for remembering to put up a featured images as part of your post.

  2. Hello Heeva!

I really enjoyed ready about your action post. I think the BCSPCA and Eagle Ridge Hospital are both great places to volunteer. In fact, in my career class right now we are looking at various job/volunteer opportunities and my top two are the two you volunteer at. I have been wanting to volunteer at both of these wonderful positions for so long and as soon as I can, when I turn 16, I’m hoping to. I’m very excited to hear what these volunteer positions entail from your prospective and I think what you are doing as a volunteer really helps our community and helps your value of “helping”. I would be interested in not only learning what you do as a volunteer, as you mentioned you would be explaining that in your next post, but I also think it would be interesting to learn why you decided to volunteer at these two positions, what you like/dislike and what motivated you to stick with it. Thank’s for the great post 🙂
