Action

Hi everyone, my name is Maria and in this post I will be talking about goal number 5 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Goal 5 aims to “achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.” What I am most interested about, is the objective within goal 5, which is ” To ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision making in political, economic and public life.”

I researched some facts related to gender equality:

  • Belgium, Denmark, France, Latvia, Luxembourg and Sweden are the only 6 countries in the world to give women equal legal work rights as men
  • In 2017, there were 15 female world leaders in office, eight of whom are their country’s first woman in power
  • It will take 108 years to close the gender gap. The biggest gaps to close are in the economic and political empowerment dimensions
  • 22% of Artificial Intelligence professionals are women, this is a result of the lack of confidence that institutions provide to women.
  • There are approximately 781 million illiterate adults worldwide, two-thirds of whom are women
  • In 46 countries, women now hold more than 30 per cent of seats in national parliament in at least one chamber
  • More than 100 countries have taken action to track budget allocations for gender equality
